About The R Word Campaign

The R Word Campaign began with a simple belief: words shape how we treat each other. We work to retire a hurtful slur and replace it with language that respects every person.

Our Mission

We help people understand what the r word means, why it wounds, and how small changes in speech make a lasting difference. Our goal is a culture where people with intellectual disabilities feel valued in schools, workplaces, and online communities alike.

Our Story

The campaign grew from the frustration of families and self-advocates who were tired of hearing a slur treated as harmless slang. Instead of policing speech, they built a hopeful pledge that invites people to stop, think, and choose a kinder word. That message has since reached classrooms, sports teams, and gaming communities.
